About Christy - The Manic Crafter™

I've been The Manic Crafter™ for years I'm just getting this blog up and running again though, lol. Other than that I wish I was still 29, that my toddler liked to go to bed on time, that my teens liked cleaning, and I wish my dog could let himself out.

Wear What You Like #1

Sometimes you see something you like but it’s too expensive, sometimes you see something you’d like to wear but it won’t look good on your shape.  Sometimes I take matters into my own hands and in the words of Tim Gunn “Make it work”

Keep your eyes out here for projects where I’ve decided to toss the rules to the wind and simply wear what I like.

Quilting Right Along

So I’m making a quilt for my father for his birthday and fathers day, I figure this makes up for all the crappy gifts and no gifts (when I was broke) over the years considering I’ve put over $100 in fabric into it, more hours than I can shake a stick at, and had to get a new sewing machine just so I could quilt it.  Of course the sewing machine also doubles as MY birthday present, lol.  Dad is the 10th I’m the 15th. I just hope I get it done in time to send for Fathers Day at least :)

Here’s the outline of what I’m doing

B for brown, R for Red, Y for yellow, G for green, white for the big solid squares and green and blue for the other 5 big squares.

Listen To Private Converstations

…and You Mayn’t Understand What You Hear

So I chaperoned today for my kids band because they were playing at his High Schools graduation, let me tell you I’m just frickin appalled that kids get certificates of completion, back in my day you graduated with a diploma or you didn’t get squat, and if you didn’t get squat that means you went out and got a GED. That cert is like telling kids, ahhh how sweet you showed up every once in awhile and may even have turned in some homework. Honey, that ain’t reality.

Do or do not there is no try.

So I’m sitting on the bus talking to one of the girls and some of the rowdy obviously lacking in common sense students who I had already reprimanded because they had been speaking over the bus driver and her directions and refused to wear their seatbelts (don’t even get me started on how lacking their parents must be if their children behave thusly in public) overheard me talking about how a good number of the HS kids I’ve run across were going to end up at McDonalds. OMG don’t even get me started and all the BS I heard for the next 5 minutes because they thought I was talking about them, one girls was like “ohhh really” and I tried to joke with them but they’ve all got chips on their shoulders because they’re of the mind that the world owes them, again I blame the parents. Never mind ya had to have been there, just let me say I really don’t want to chaperone again; yeah there were some nice kids but some were just ignorant. Of course the real smart ones would take those Micky D jobs and run with it and get a college education thanks to their hard work.

The world does not owe you s**t. If you want something go earn it with the sweat of your brow. My ancestors didn’t fight, die, immigrate, defend, and work their butts off for me to sit on mine and I doubt anybody elses did either.

End Of The School Year

Ugh, the end of the school year is expensive, there’s dances, summer music classes, new summer clothes, extra food to be stocked for eat at home lunches, and then there’s the list of activities they want.
Dee had 8th grade graduation… I don’t remember the oldest having that but she did, now I’ll have 2 in high school and one not even in school yet :-D
Have to go chaperone today for Steph’s band since they’re going to be playing at the graduation ceremony, Dave’s going to help, no other family members volunteered, imagine that, but it needs to be done. To all the people who conveniently don’t have the time or money (Steph’s birthday comes to mind) you don’t have a say in the kiddos life so stop complaining, if you are a part of the solution you’re a part of the problem.
On a happy note I got my new sewing machine in, so far so good, next time I’m quilting in sections though, lol.

Strip Delight Quilt Book- Jelly Rolls

Ok, so I got this book

So far so good, I made a quilt, the measurements are a bit off but I don’t think that was the books fault, I think that was me because I didn’t use strips in some instances where I wanted a solid square :-D

Here’s the quilts you can do from it…

Ohhhh, Pretty!

Ahhhhh, More Pretty Stuff!

You can get it at Amazon cheaper than you can get it at the craft store (usually) or if you’re my friend you can borrow my copy :-) I’ll let you know when I’m done with my current quilt, I can’t even say which it is in case the person I am making the quilt for sees this post, lol.

Christy’s Tip For Newbie Sewers #1

I don’t know how many times someone has said to me that they couldn’t sew something because it looked too complicated, well, I’m here to dispel that. Period.

So how do I go about turning a non sewer into a confident sewer overnight? Paper.  Yes, that’s right, paper.  Take a sheet of lined paper, set your machine on straight stitch and the longest stitch (4 on my basic machine) and practice sewing the lines, remember you pedal for the sewing machine is just like the gas pedal on a car, do not go fast while learning to sew, but by all means learn to control the speed.  I’m telling you by the 3rd sheet of paper you’ll have it down pat.

So maybe I really don’t like shopping after all…

I can say this, I understand now why my wonderful Mother always would snag a cold one after getting home from shopping, lol.  It turns out after you hit your mid 30′s and thanks to the contributions of children when you actually go shopping for yourself you’re going to feel like you’ve been run through the ringer like the folks from What Not To Wear have gotten a hold of you!!!!!!!!!  And to make it worse I was shopping Kohls and Ross today because Kohls was having their early bird and I had a coupon for an extra 20% off the total.  Hey, I need new shorts what can I say?  It happens.

Of course I fell into the trap that many mothers do when they’re at a sale, the kids stuff is marked down too and your little darlin needs stuff :-) so the swimsuits were marked down and I didn’t have kiddo with me so I grabbed 4 and some assorted shirts and a couple pair of shorts and brought them home with me to let her pick.  She picked a real cute suit that I’ll have to get some pics of later, so then I gathered up everything she didn’t like and went back to the store.  Then I went to Ross for myself and tried on a ton of stuff, but it’s hard when your an hourglass lemme tell ya and hey here’s a tip for clothing makers, bigger sizes need stronger straps because our tata’s are bigger.

Now we’re off to Moe’s, tomorrow though Bella and I will be going to Childrens Place!  Not going without her it makes the process easier for her stuff even if I do spend half the time chasing her down.
